I also understand … I also understand that the 135 has this DC feature which is basically a fancy way of smearing vasoline on the lens. You can get a much better effect by smearing vasoline on a uv filter or a piece of saran wrap and putting it infront of your lens. It’s a bit messy, but works wonders. Try it, it works with any lens!

Dex both lenses are … Dex both lenses are very well suited to portraiture, I find that the 85mm allows me to get closer to my subjects which gives you more of a connected look, and the light gathering capabilities and the bokeh of the 85 1.4 will give your photos a very unique look. I do not have the 135 f2, but I do have that focal range in my 70-200 zoom and find the F.O.V difference between 85mm and 135mm can be negated by 3 steps in either direction.

get a light tripod … get a light tripod for exposures under one second, get a heavier tripod for exposures over 30 seconds. As a general rule, the longer the focal length of your lenses, 200mm+ the heavier the tripod you’ll need. If you can handle the heavier weight I’d recommend something heftier. If you’re shooting with shorter focal lengths, you can get away with lighter ones.

Self-detonation it … Self-detonation it doesn’t have, but it does has an overexposure sensor that flashes the hot areas like an A-bomb detonation. Is that close enough?
Lenses I would recommend are as follows
50mm 1.8 = cheap and WAY Fantastic low light lens (one of my personal favs)
24-70mm 2.8 = big expensive hulking piece of glass that can do it all.
70-200mm 2.8VR= an even bigger expensive piece of glass that does amazing portraits and sports.
85mm 1.4 = Legendary lens for portraits and creaminess.

yeah, i’ve more or … yeah, i’ve more or less decided to go for the nikon. then, when i’m earning money, i’ll get a 500 series hasselblad. the ability to instantly view pictures, as well as the ease of digital post processing, easily trumps the medium format quality. but still…. there’s something so gratifying about shooting on such a beautiful piece of mechanics.
thanks a lot for the advice! It is greatly appreciated

also you might want … also you might want to check out the Bronica SQ-ai, it’s a Hasselblad clone that’s more reliable. You won’t go broke trying to build a lens system around the Bronica system either. You can perhaps compromise and get the D700 and save up for a Bronica SQ-ai system? Keep in mind that Film cameras have a running cost, and digital has very little running cost past the initial investment.

you’ll have to … you’ll have to analyze what you’re going to be shooting most of the time. Properly handled, the Hasselblad will produce much better pictures than the D700. But, you have to think about practicality and mobility too. The best camera you have is the one that you’re carrying, and my Hasselblad is too big to leave the house/studio. The NIkon D700 is an amazing learning tool and very spontaneous and fun to use. If it helps, I use my D700 about 90 percent of the time, your milage may vary.

It’s only gonna be … It’s only gonna be a matter of time before the 24 megapixel sensor is going to be in D3X, with-in a 3 month time frame is my educated guess. But a 24 Megapixel in a D700 sized body might have to wait about another year or so for it’s debut. 12 Megapixel is perfect for me though, so I’m gonna stick with my D700 for a few years.
